How to care for an olive wood chess board

Wipe an olive wood chess board with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not soak it, and do not leave it in strong heat or direct sun for long periods. The grain, knots, and live edge are part of the wood, not damage.

Daily care

  • Dust the board and the pieces with a dry cloth.
  • If something spills, wipe it soon with a cloth that is only slightly damp, then dry the board.
  • Store the pieces in the drawer if the set has one, so they are not left in the sun.

What to avoid

  • Do not run the board under water or put it in a dishwasher.
  • Do not use a soaking wet cloth. Olive wood moves when it takes on water.
  • Keep the board off a radiator and out of a bright window for hours at a time. Heat and sun fade the color and can open the grain.

Why two boards never match

Each Just True Arts board is cut from solid wood. Knots, color, and the shape of the live edge change from one board to the next. A lighter stripe or a small knot is normal. The outer size can vary by about 10 percent from the listed size, and the squares by about 5 percent.

The same care applies to the olive wood chess sets with or without a storage drawer.
